What an opening week it’s been for the cast and crew of John Wick: Chapter 3 with two big pieces of news being announced just days after it’s LONG awaited release. The third instalment of the series has ended the dominant reign over the US box office, previously held by Avengers: Endgame taking in $57 Million USD in its opening weekend and a further $36 Million world wide, compared to Endgame’s $29 Million USD.
This news came in shortly after a date was announced for Chapter 4’s release. The world had barely enough time to process the ending of Chapter 3 before it was announced that Chapter 4 is set for release on May 21st 2021, 2 years and 5 days after Chapter 3’s release on May 16th of this year.
My only thoughts as of this moment about Chapter 4’s release date is that I’m impatient and I NEED it now. I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter 3 and am very excited to see what will happen next. I was however surprised to see that Chapter 3 did more sales opening weekend than Endgame. I wasn’t surprised Chapter 3 did well, I had a feeling it would. What surprised me was that it managed to outdo Endgame and the fact it was by such a substantial margin.
I feel like Endgame would have appealed to a wider audience than John Wick, simply because it’s less of an acquired taste. Super hero movies are great for the whole family to watch, while a rather violent assassin themed film isn’t exactly a movie you can take your friend to see without introducing them to it first. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both great movies and deserve all of the success in the world. I just expected they’d be a little closer in opening weekend sales than they were.
