(Not pictured above: Book 3 – Five Greatest Warriors).
Written by Australian Author Matthew Reilly, the Seven Ancient Wonders series follows Jack West Jr. and his team all over the world on various life threatening missions including, but not limited to finding the seven ancient wonders of the world.
The best ways I can come up with to describe this series is a bit of a cluster f**k and one of, if not the most action packed adventure type series in existence. There is often so much going on (even more so when the characters are spread out across the world) that it’s hard to follow exactly what’s going on until you’re told EXACTLY what’s going on, which can make books to confusing to enjoy at times. In this case however, as the books progressed and the storyline got more and more complex, I found myself wanting to figure it out more and more.
Those who have read Reilly’s works will know that a good number of them are notorious for having colourful language and enough violence to require an R rating if it were a movie. This series is no different in that I often found myself laughing like a 12 year old at A LOT of expletive strings and shuddering as I imagined the violent parts. With that in mind, at no point did I find any of the mature content to be unnecessary . Although some people mind find it to be a bit distasteful, it was used perfectly to help convey certainn characters’ emotions or to add humour and/or intensity in various scenes.
I have read a number of Reily’s previous works, and as I enjoyed them I too have geatly enjoyed reading this series so far. So much so I am unable to find anything negative to say. It’s just THAT good. I could take marks off for having to wait until 2020 for the next book to come out, but I won’t. I’m not that impatient (or am I?).
Would I recommend this series to others? Definitely! If you’ve read it before, read it again! I however wouldn’t recommend letting anyone under the age of 15 read it. A majority of the content is not something you’d want them discussing at home or around others.
