Yes, you are reading this correctly. After 533 days away, The Book and Movie is BACK and ready to kick things into high gear. To celebrate our return, I thought it would be fun to take this opportunity to also celebrate the launch of the Paramount network in Australia and review the movie Infinite. Before I get started, I am going to take a moment to issue a SPOILER ALERT. Although I will not be discussing any parts of the story line, I will be discussing how I felt as honestly and in as much detail as I can. Unfortunately I was unable to find a specific budget for the film, It is blaringly obvious that the creators behind the intense Sci Fi/Action film used as much of it as they possibly could when putting it together. Not only did they manage to secure movie mega star Mark Wahlberg for the leading role, the entirety of its 106 minutes (excluding credit time of course) was jam packed full of visually stunning scenes featuring expensive cars, exciting action and super cool technology. All of this really impressed the 12 year old nerd inside me that enjoys cool toys and watching people fight each other in the most creative ways possible.
Adding onto its visual appeal, the conceptually interesting storyline was backed up by a well put together cast. Each cast member suited the role they were chosen for, had believable chemistry with other members and seemingly gave their all to their respective roles.
Where the previously stated aspects set the movie up to be a high quality action film, it is unfortunately my opinion that the writing really dropped the ball in terms of quality. It wasn’t all bad though, there were a few well written scenes that made at least some of the movie enjoyable, there just weren’t enough of those scenes.
My main Issue with these scenes came down to subpar dialogue. Scenes would start off perfectly fine, then all of a sudden it seemed like characters were trying to be prove how “cool” they were, and each time it happened, it felt completely unnecessary. Especially when the character was involved in action scene shortly before the dialogue or in the scene prior.
Although the dialogue issue was hard to ignore, I could have gotten past if the rest of the movie was good enough and everything made sense. Unfortunately I often found myself confused what was going on because of how the movie transitioned between scenes. It felt like I’d missed parts of the movie. So much so I even had to re-wind and make sure I hadn’t managed to nod off mid movie.
To summarise, if they put same amount of effort into making sure they had a quality script as they put into the making the movie aesthetically pleasing, they could have had an amazing film. Maybe they could have split it up into two different films. Use the first film to set up the story line in more detail and build up a fan base, then use the second film to conclude the story with an action packed end. That way they don’t have to cram it all in in under 2 hours, and maybe even make more money in the process.
But that’s just my opinion. I’d love to hear what you have to say!
